In Loving Memory of Robert John Armstrong, age 90, of Dryden, Ontario, who passed away gracefully on September 1, 2026, at the Dryden Regional Health Centre, following a brief illness. He was comforted and surrounded by the deep love of his family.
Robert was born on April 6, 1936, in Fort Frances, Ontario, to his loving parents, the late Ronald and Ilene Armstrong. A true gentleman through and through, Robert lived a full, generous, and active life centered entirely around his family and his community.
He was dedicated to his career, retiring after 34 years of service at the Dryden Pulp and Paper Mill. Outside of work, Robert was a talented carpenter and an all-around handyman. His craftsmanship was undeniable; he built two of his own homes from the ground up and was always the first to lend a hand to help others build theirs.
Robert loved the outdoors and took great joy in fishing, camping, and hunting. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing team sports, including Curling and many seasons with the Controllers Baseball Team. As a devoted father, he was fiercely supportive of his children, actively coaching hockey and standing by to cheer them on through every single one of their childhood activities. Robert was also an avid animal lover.
He was reunited in peace with his beloved wife of 59 years, Jackie Armstrong. Robert was also predeceased by his brothers, Glenson Armstrong and Melvin Armstrong; and his grandson, Mason Hus.
His legacy of kindness lives on through his family. He is survived by his loving children: Glen Armstrong (Stefanie), Leanne Hus (Mark), Ronald Armstrong (Tammy), and Shelly Armstrong Brunet. He was the proud grandfather to Maya, Jolie, Nolan, and Henry. He leaves behind Sandra Lappage, whom he loved like a little sister, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Together, Robert and Jackie loved to travel, with their most memorable journey being an unforgettable trip to Alaska. There, they travelled along the Alaskan Highway, a roadway built in part by Robert’s own father, Grandpa Armstrong. Back at home, Robert and Jackie kept a door that was always open. Their house was a haven of warmth for family and friends, whether it was for a quick social visit or providing a safe roof over the head of anyone in need, for as long as they needed it.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Dryden Regional Health Centre for their exceptional, compassionate care and support during Robert’s final days.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Dryden Community Funeral Home, with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Robert’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #63, 34 Queen St., Dryden, ON, P8N 1A1.
