Martin Axel Johnson

February 24, 1943 – April 17, 2019

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, uncle and great uncle of our family on April 17, 2019.

Born in Dryden, ON to Axel and Jean Johnson on February 24, 1943, Martin was raised on the family farm in Eton Rugby along with his three brothers. Martin attended school in Eton Rugby as a child then on to Dryden High School. He enjoyed country life, work and chores on the farm, hunting in the area and fishing up at Rugby Lake were some of his favourite things to do. While attending Dryden High School he met his wife Clara. As it turned out, they were meant for each other as Martin passed away just shy of their 54th wedding anniversary. The two were married on May 7, 1965 and had one son, Kingsley.

After graduation, Martin went to work for Dryden Paper Company working in the stock prep area his entire 43 year career there before retiring in 2003. From the bottom jobs to earning his role as top wet end operator, of what was the #2 paper machine for the mill, he enjoyed his work immensely. While working he became involved in the Union Local 1323 and spent many years on the executive as Treasurer. In the early years of marriage, working and building a strong family was important. Martin and Clara grew together throughout the years enjoying time together golfing, fishing, camping and travel. Many great nights were spent just being together to talk, watch tv shows they liked or to play games together, especially out in the backyard gazebo over a glass of wine.

Martin was predeceased by his parents Axel and Jean along with his brother Victor. Left to mourn are his loving wife Clara, son Kingsley and his wife Michelle, two brothers Melvin (Heather) of Dryden, ON and Rodney (Gerianne) of Thunder Bay, ON, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews as well as other family and friends.

The family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the EMS Service, DRHC Emergency Team, nursing staff and any other involved in the EXCELLENT care and support provided to us during this time of loss.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

A Memorial Service will be held for 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the First United Church in Dryden, ON with Alice Bloomfield officiating. Oxdrift Legion Branch #41 will provide a Special Service of Remembrance in honour of Martin’s many years of support and dedication.
