Shirley Campeau (Van Andel), born on October 30, 1950, in Dordrecht, Netherlands, peacefully left this world with her eldest daughter by her side on December 16, 2023. Surrounded by the love of her family, Shirley embarked on her final journey, reuniting with her husband, Gilles Campeau, and her parents, Willem (Bill) and Dirkje Van Andel, brother Gerard Van Andel and sons-in-law Lonny Leroux and Dan Anderson who had gone before her.
She leaves behind a legacy of tenacity and lasting memories that are etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Shirley is survived by her daughters Tracy Leroux and Melissa Klaver (Rob), and extended family Gina Buckler (Marty), Gary Campeau (Lyne), Randy Campeau, Lori Anderson, and Darren Campeau (Amy).
Her unassuming spirit and enduring support touched the lives of her friends and family. She spoke with endless pride about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Devon, Riley, Cody, Hunter, Carson, Shayne, Carter, Nakaiah, Prentice, Helix, Linux and Navy. She witnessed their growth through family gatherings, shared stories over phone calls and social media photos. Some have already blossomed into thoughtful and engaging adults, while others are still on their journey—old enough to grasp the significance of a life beyond this one, yet young enough not to dwell on it.
Shirley’s journey to Canada began on February 12, 1952, aboard the S.S. Zuiderkruis, which carried 827 passengers from Rotterdam to Halifax, arriving on February 20. Accompanied by her parents and siblings Gerard, Hendrika, Martin, John, Bill, Richard, and Bob, the family settled in Brockville, ON. It was here that Shirley spent her formative years, riding horses (winning races!) and embracing the adventures life had to offer.
In addition to her love for family, Shirley’s purpose manifested in her desire to work hard and appreciate the simple joys of everyday living. As we bid farewell to Shirley Campeau, we remember her quiet strength and quick wit. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the eternal love of those she has joined on the other side.
