It is with profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Joseph Wabange (Waabishki Gaabo) age 68, of Migisi Sahgaigan (Eagle Lake First Nation) on December 25 2023.

Joseph was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and community helper. Joe (Joey) was born on October 2, 1955 in Dryden Ontario to May and Samuel Wabange. He was passionate about working for his home community of Migisi Sahgaigan as a home maintenance worker and groundskeeper. Joe met his friend Martina in 1987, and they had 4 children; Anita, Jodi, Wyatt and Curtis. They raised their children in Migisi Sahgaigan and Longlac. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a humble man who devoted his life to his family, community, and was always helping others. He was known by community for his generosity, humour and skilled harvesting of food for community events.

His favourite pastimes were fishing, hunting, playing his lottery tickets and Bingo (buddies knew him as Jackpot Joe). He also enjoyed teaching his knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture with community members, Northern Ontario Medical students and anyone else who wanted to learn.

Joe will sadly be missed by all his friends and family.

Joe is survived by his friend Martina Waboose, children; Anita, Jodi, Wyatt, Curtis Waboose, and 4 grandchildren; Jason Hardy, Toni Derosier, Maryanne and Sapphire Waboose. His best pets baby and Randy. Joe is also survived by his siblings Michael (Julia), Margaret, Bernadette (Alex) and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents Samuel Wabange Sr. and May Kavanaugh and siblings; Lucille, Samuel Jr, Elvin and Maryann.
