Melanie “Millie” Flamand passed away gracefully, with her sons by her side, on Saturday November 20th, at Dryden Regional Health Centre. She was 88 years old.
She leaves behind her sons, Merv, Bob, and Tom; beloved grandchildren, Jeremy, Carrie (Joey), Jasmine (Allen), Brooke (Ryan), Chantelle, Chelsey, Jesse, Zach, Marissa (Albie), and Bernice along with several great-grandchildren.
Millie is survived by her brothers Norman and Frank (Brenda) and sisters Alice, Ruby (Pierre), Cauleen (Ken), and Loretta (Bruce). Millie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Millie was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Lizzie Chartrand; brothers Noel, Marcel, Hubert & Allen; sisters Eva, Delia & Lena ; her beloved daughter Barbara, grand-daughter Erinn, and husband Jack Flamand.
Millie’s life was devoted to her children, grand-children and other family members. Millie worked tirelessly to help people in the Aboriginal community to strive for a more productive and satisfying life. Her work within the Native community and volunteerism for the Metis, NWAC, ONWA, and the DAWRC which was the pinnacle of her work. Her achievements did not go unnoticed as Millie was honored a medal, the Diamond Jubilee, from the Queen for all of her lifelong accomplishments. She had a fun, vivacious personality and was such a powerful woman. Her presence demanded attention everywhere from local events of the grassroots level to a National level. She was known for her hard work and dedication to the community. Her work also included 25 years at the Dryden Paper Mill. With Millie in our family our history was colourfully embellished many times over. We will miss her. She was truly the “Leader” of our family.
We are at peace.
