In loving memory of Klaus Uber, 85, who passed away peacefully October 1, 2025 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre with family by his side.
Klaus is survived by his children Kristina (Bernd) Richter, Walter Uber and Alice Allan; beloved Opa to Alex, Lauren, Benjamin (Callie) and Andrew (Alexandra); brother Rolf (Lina), sister Ellen Ladouceur and many nieces and nephews, including family in Europe.
Klaus was predeceased by his wife Helga (2005), his parents Heinrich and Elfriede Uber, parents-in-law Georg and Marie Schneidereit, brother Heinz, sister and brother-in-law Annegret (Daniel) Metcalfe, sisters-in-law Marge Uber and Edith Uber, brothers-in-law Albert and Oswald Schneidereit.
Born in Neuenrade, Germany, Klaus and his family immigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s, settling briefly in Sherbrooke, QC then Windsor, ON. Klaus’s life was defined by work. A self professed workaholic, he started at a young age as a farmhand, helping to support his family. Some of the many jobs throughout his life included: certified miner (Timmins and Elliot Lake), butcher at Schwab’s deli in Windsor, hammerman at Dominion Forge and later Chrysler Forge in Detroit, road construction in Alberta. He was proud of the fact that every new job taken offered a better wage.
In 1964 he met and married his beloved Helga and they started their family, first Kristina and two years later, Walter. Wanting to raise their family in a safer and healthier environment, they decided to head north and after adventuring across Canada in their VW van, they finally settled in Dryden. Renovating their little house on Airport Road and planting the first of many beautiful gardens, they put roots down. Alice soon came along and their family was complete.
After a brief stint at Wilson’s Coldstream, Klaus worked hard to obtain his industrial mechanic/millwright certificate and worked for the Dryden mill until his retirement in 2000.
Never idle, Klaus enjoyed many pastimes, especially outdoor activities and travelling. Fishing the area lakes with his ‘Pud’ was a favourite, along with tramping through the bush, foraging for mushrooms, blueberries and anything else that could be canned, frozen or dried. Many local backroads and communities were explored during long Sunday drives, usually coming home by way of the Dairy Queen. Regular trips down east and the west coast (and points in between) were an absolute must to reconnect and keep up with family and friends. Travel was a constant thread throughout his and Helga’s life, no moss was certainly allowed to gather!
Wine making was Klaus’s specialty, he fine tuned the process over the years and many will remember the potent brew that came out of his wine cellar! “Come on in and have a glass of wine!” was a familiar refrain.
He could often be found in his garage tinkering, fixing, modifying anything and everything, a true advocate of ‘waste not want not’. In his later years, he took pleasure walking his dog Daisy and was a familiar sight on Keith Avenue and beyond, occasionally walking the neighbour’s dog too.
Klaus’s family was his pride and joy, especially when the grandchildren came along. Hockey games, recitals, graduations, he was there with his love and support. All that he did and all that he worked hard for, was to make a better life for his family. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten, forever in our hearts.
The family would like to express their most heartfelt gratitude for all the caring and compassionate hospital and home care agencies that helped us keep Dad in his home, something very important to him. And to friends who dropped by to brighten his day, thank you, it was so very much appreciated.
A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, November 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour Lutheran Church with Dean Benham officiating. A private family interment will follow at the Dryden Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations would be gratefully accepted by Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 175 Cecil Ave., Dryden, ON P8N 2X6 or the Dryden Food Bank, 62 Queen St., Dryden, ON P8N 1A4.
Sleep sweet Dad
