It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jim Bethune, who peacefully passed away at the age of 71 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre on March 14, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
Jim was born on March 23, 1953, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Rose and Bob Bethune, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Shirley, and his sister Joan Bethune of Vancouver, BC. Jim will also be fondly remembered by many friends, colleagues, and loved ones whose lives he touched.
A man of many passions, Jim found great joy in his home and property, where he could immerse himself in working on his trails, landscaping projects, and mechanical and auto body endeavours. His love for travel and snowmobiling with friends brought him much happiness over the years. Jim had a remarkable ability to connect with people and always found joy in the simpler pleasures of life.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Wilson-Smith and the compassionate nursing staff at the Dryden Regional Health Centre for their care and support during Jim’s final days.
Jim’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
As per his wishes, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, PO BOX 4613, Stn E, Ottawa, ON K1S 1P7

March 26, 2025 at 5:23 pmDear Shirley,
I was very sorry to hear about Jim. He was a much loved and highly regarded member of the barley team at GRL. I remember his infectious smile and his unfailing willingness to help. He will be widely missed.
We have been back in Scotland for more than 20 years–time does fly.
With my condolences,
