It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our father, grandfather and ‘Great’ grandfather Herb Kiewning. Who passed away peacefully at the age of 88 surrounded by family and the support of the dedicated staff at the Dryden Hospital.
Herb lived a full life which sadly meant he had to say goodbye to many family members and friends along the way. Most notably he was predeceased by his brother Gerald in 1984. His brother Fritz in 2004 and the love of his life, his wife Bessie in 2013.
He persevered through all and role modeled to his family what true strength looks like.
Dad will be dearly missed by his brother Erwin (Inge) from Germany and his sister-in-law Daisy. His sons Paul (Carol), Ken (Shelley) and his daughter Carolyn. Grandsons Scott and Isaac (Jessica) and granddaughters Gabrielle (Delaney) and Ricki Lee (Ryan). And the source of so much joy for Grampie over the last few years, his great-grandchildren Lyra and Hugo, Cara- Maria and Gianna. And by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Herb ventured to Canada from Germany as a young man at the age of 17. He made his way to Dryden where he rescued a damsel in distress who was hold up in town with car troubles. That young lady by the name of Bessie became the love of Herb’s life and they soon married and settled in Dryden to start their family.
Herb worked his career in the bush cutting logs for the local pulp mill but his true calling was recognized after retirement as he worked at trying to outwit the critters on his trapline! He was an active member of the local trapper’s ‘gang’ and enjoyed both his time in the bush and his time with his fellow trappers at meetings or planning fundraising events to support local youth.
The family would like to thank all those who have reached out with thoughts and prayers and especially want to thank the medical staff at the Dryden hospital. Herbie was always so very grateful for the care he received as he fought through his latest health issues. And we, his family, would like to add our appreciation for the dignity and respect you afforded our beloved dad as he made his way to reunite with his beloved Bessie. Herbie lived his life on his terms and was able to leave this world on his terms! For that we will always be so grateful!
