Douglas Lake December 5, 1927 - March 17, 2024

Date of Funeral

June 15, 2024

Doug passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario with family by his side.

Doug was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on December 5, 1927 to William and Rose Lake. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley, parents William and Rose, sister Irene, grandson Brad West and his great granddaughter Carly West. Doug is survived by his five children: Jana (Ross), Wendy, Jim (Lynda), Keith (Denise) and Ted. Doug was also blessed to have 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

When the grandchildren came to visit, it always put a smile on his face. It was easy to see how proud he was of all of them. Dad lived in Saskatoon until he and his parents moved to Beardmore, Ontario where he worked at Leitch Gold Mine as an assayer. When the mine closed in 1965, Doug moved his family to Dryden where he opened a Marshall Wells store. The mining bug was still in him though, so he went off to work at Griffith Mine in Ear Falls, working there until it closed.

One of the ways Dad showed us that family was important is that he was always a great provider. Doug always called Dryden home even though he moved to Kenora in his later years so Wendy could keep an eye on him. In dad’s younger years, he was an avid baseball player and an even better curler. Dad enjoyed gardening, flowers, Detroit sports teams and of course, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Doug and Shirley found themselves at many sporting events that any of their children, grandchildren or great grandchildren were playing. Sometimes, they would have to divide and conquer. Dad’s humour and smile will be missed by all.

Dad, you will live in our hearts forever!

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Dryden Community Funeral Home.
