Doreen Meawasige January 4, 1941 - October 25, 2021

Surrounded by her loved ones and close family, Doreen Meawasige passed away peacefully on October 25th, 2021 at the Dryden Regional health Centre.

Doreen grew up in Eagle Lake with her family and close friends  Margie, Catherine, May, and Beverly. While she may have “had a few” in her younger years, and was the life of the party with her singing and dancing, she was respected by so many in the community.

Doreen eventually took her zest for life with her to Wabigoon where she lived with her loving partner Carl Williams for many years.

Always up for a new adventure, Carl and Doreen would get into their car and see where the road would take them. No adventure could be complete however, without a visit to Eagle River and a chance to visit Lesley and the kids. Ashlea, Curtis, and Nikole enjoyed the stories of the day as they shared a meal with the family before Doreen and Carl were refueled and ready to go on another one. Doreen and Carl spent most of their time enjoying food and each other’s company.  “Weechuk” was a staple in their living room and was often there when they needed someone.

Carl’s unexpected passing was hard felt and left an emptiness in Doreen’s life which she filled with family. Moving to Friendship Terrace in Eagle River allowed her daily visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren Abbie Owen and Mylah. Being a “kookum” gave her purpose and something to live for. Not one Christmas, holiday or celebration passed without her being a big part of it.  Recently her Niece Yvette and husband Patrice moved back and she was able to spend time with both of them, especially enjoying neckbone soup. She will be missed more than words can say.

Doreen’s second love was food. She enjoyed a meal “down the hill” at the Barker’s, or going out with the kids, Doreen also loved to cook and would often call the family over for a meal. Fried chicken, fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn became a family staple.  She always made sure you were well fed and didn’t go hungry. A good dinner needs dessert. Quite often, even with her diabetes, she would convince someone to take her for ice cream or sneak over a sweet or two. She couldn’t resist a good sweet!

Doreen played a big role in so many lives that selfishly we all wanted to keep her here. The creator had a different plan to reunite her with her family and friends in the spirit world. Today her legacy lives on.

Doreen is survived by Lesley (Jaymie) Barker; her “grand children” Ashlea, Nikole and Curtis (Rachel); her great grandchildren and best little friends Abbie, Owen & Mylah; her siblings Emily, Evelyn (Nick) & Mary Jane (Hycienth), and Frank (Virginia); as well as numerous family. She was predeceased by her mother Katherine, father Paul; sisters baby Emily, Rose, Virginia, Gerry, Doris; brothers Paul Jr, Raymond; and husband Carl Williams.

It broke our hearts to lose you,

But you never went alone,

For part of as went with you,

The day God took you home.
