The Reverend Canon Samuel Winter
January 17, 1934 – December 1, 2024
We give thanks for the life of the Rev. Samuel Winter, who died peacefully at home in Kingfisher Lake on December 1, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born in Big Sucker River traditional area between Kingfisher Lake & Big Trout Lake on January 17, 1934. He was 90 years of age. Samuel was the last surviving member of the Late Judas & Sarah Winter family, who were church leaders at Big Beaver House settlement.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Reverend Kanina (Angees), who is originally from Wunnumin Lake. They have 4 sons Stephen (Lydia), Amos (Mary), Matthias (Dora), Gideon (Victoria); and 4 daughters Jessie (Charlie), Cepra (Garry), Sarah & Naomi (Stephen). Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and relatives in Kingfisher Lake & elsewhere.
Samuel served faithfully in the Anglican Church all his life. He became a Lay Reader at a young age while living in Big Beaver House before people migrated to Kingfisher Lake in 1965. Bishop Allan ordained Samuel to the Priesthood in 1987. He became Priest-in-Charge after his Late brother Ven. William Winter became Archdeacon for the N. Ontario Region of the former Diocese of Keewatin. Bishop Ashdown gave him title of Canon in 2015 to recognize his dedicated service to the church. He was active in his ministry until he was physically unable to do so.
