Joanne Helen Bunney

March 9, 1933 – June 21, 2023

Joanne passed away suddenly at the Dryden Regional Health Centre on June 21, 2023.

Joanne Helen Bunney (nee Koski) was born in Houghton, Michigan, USA on March 9, 1933. She enjoyed a delightful childhood, surrounded by loving parents, grandparents and an older brother.

Joanne attended Houghton High School and after high school she went to Northern Michigan University majoring in English literature with plans to be a teacher, however life had other plans for her – she met her future husband in 1950 when he was in his last year of Forestry at Michigan Technological University. Love prevailed and they were married when Bob graduated in 1951. Following their wedding, they honeymooned in Lutzen, Minnesota while on their way to Port Arthur, Ontario. From there they took the train to Dryden Ontario where Bob started a forestry job with the Dryden Paper Company. In eight years they had four children. Joanne was a stay at home Mom and continued her studies through Lakehead University to obtain her library technician status. She then entered the work force at the Dryden Public Library where she worked for 20 years.

Joanne enjoyed being with people and made strong connections with many individuals and groups. She was an active member in the community for 72 years with Toastmasters, Rotary, the United Church, Bridge Club and many other formal and informal groups.

She made it a priority to spend quality time with family and friends because it was important to her. She was an avid reader, and a life long learner.

Her greatest joy and accomplishment were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who she bragged about shamelessly.

Joanne is survived by: daughter Laura Kokocinski (Henry),Thunder Bay, children Alison (Jordan), Kyle (Ashley), Erin (Dan); daughter Karen Glenister (Bryan), Calgary, children Susan (Ryan), Lauren (Devon); son Bob Moore-Bunney (Barbara), Dryden, children Brock (Tomiko), Bryce (Kristy); daughter Susan Bunney, Dryden, children Roberta, Matt (Brittny), Jack (Nicole); along with 16 great grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She died as she lived with grace, independence and strength.

“Nothing says confidence and glamour like a classic red lip.”

Joanne was pre-deceased by her mother (Helmi), father (Urho), brother (Douglas) and her husband Robert Moore-Bunney of 61 years.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Church with Alice Bloomfield officiating.

Burial will follow at the Dryden Cemetery.

Although I never met her, I will carry her forever in my heart. We had so many similarities; both married professional Foresters, both were proficient in the use of the English language, both Finnish, both had a love of the English language and the love of reading. AND….red lipstick FOREVER! Sending my love to all that loved her. I light a candle tonight in her memory. Susan Elizabeth Schroedel, Montana USA.

Condolences to all. I have to say it was neat to be around your Mother when we moved back to Dryden in 2013. I got involved with Dryden GM Ice Dogs, your Mom was at most games, always with enthusiasm and encouragement, needing help fund raising go to Rotary there she was. No one worked harder in our community, she was so positive, what a gift your Mom was to Dryden and an even bigger gift to share conversation with her.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family of Joanne. I met Joanne for the first time at her garage sale. I said this woman is Finnish and so am I. Could not believe we both grew up in the U.P. of Michigan close to each other. I enjoyed our friendship and I loved to bring her pasty’s, Trenary toast and Vollraths sausage every time I visited Upper Michigan. She had alot of SISU and I will truly miss her.

So sorry to hear of Joann’s passing. My dad Nestor Maijala was your grandma Helmi’s brother so your mom would be my first cousin. I remember her pushing the stroller going to Mumu’s house in Houghton. She had you 2 older girls at the time. My condolences to you all. Fly high with the angels Joann.🙏

My condolences to Laura, Karen, Bob and their families. I was always excited when the Bunney family would appear at Urho and Helmi’s home next door in Houghton ‘back in the day’. May she rest in peace, and her family find comfort with the memories of a life well lived.
