Roy “Ted” Mitchell December 27, 1939 - June 13, 2022

Date of Funeral

June 24, 2022

After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ted (Roy) Mitchell at the Dryden Regional Health Centre on June 13, 2022.

Ted was born in Midland, Ontario on December 27th 1939 to Roy and Annie (Smith) Mitchell, where he spent his childhood growing up alongside his sister Barbara and brother James.

In high school, Ted joined the band learning to play Trumpet, which eventually lead him to winning many awards including “Top soloist in Canada”.  He enjoyed playing at many events and social gatherings in the area.

During those years Ted also developed a love for cars, buying many and spending hours learning how to drive and fix them.

At the age of 16, Ted started work at his first grocery store learning the skills needed to become a butcher that would lead to a great future and long career.

From an early age, Ted developed a love for hunting, fishing and the great outdoors.  That love brought Ted, his wife Julia and their 3 kids to Northwestern Ontario.  They settled in Vermilion Bay in the late 1980’s.   Ted brought his skills as a Butcher to the Vermilion Bay Co-op where he worked for many years.

After being settled for a period of time Ted and Julia started their business “Mitchell’s Meat and Sausage” where they provided meat processing and sausage making to the area for over 30 years.

When Ted wasn’t busy working, his favourite pastime had him spending many hours exploring area lakes and fishing them.  Summer or winter it didn’t matter.  He enjoyed it so much that he added Fishing Guide to his career list.  He spent days off and summers guiding at area Lodges well into his retirement years.   He also loved bringing family and friends visiting from out of town on his northern adventures that usually ended with a nice fish fry back at the house.

Ted always had a smile and joke for friends and strangers alike.  He had a passion for wanting to make people laugh and could spark up a conversation with anyone.  He loved to be the entertainment in any social gathering.

Ted enjoyed watching sports (especially the Jays and the Jets).  He played hockey on the Vermilion Bay Kings team (#99 forever).

Ted had a great love for his family and especially his grandkids.  Papa would always take the babies outside to swing in the tree, for walks to watch the birds, or to get the “big trucks” to honk along the highway.  He enjoyed watching them play and grow into the beautiful humans they are today.

Ted is pre-deceased by his parents Roy Mitchell and Annie (Smith) Mitchell, Brother-in-law Yaseen Siddiqui and son-in-law Jeff Schwartz.

He will be terribly missed by his wife Julia, children Renee Schwartz, Ted Mitchell, Susan (Kris) Miclash, Ken Mitchell, Kim (Brian) Lesperance and Bill Mitchell.  Grandchildren Madison Schwartz, Cole and Julia Mitchell, Carl and Ryan Lesperance, Kendra, Duncan, Britt and Averee Mitchell.  Sister Barbara Siddiqui and Jim (Suzanne) Mitchell. Nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Thank you for the wonderful care Ted received from the staff at Dryden Regional Health Centre, his oncology team at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital and the Machin Medical Clinic that had helped him through his journey.  Our family is thankful for everything you have done.

A Memorial Service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima, Vermilion Bay, on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Father Alan Campeau officiating.

A Luncheon at Happy Go Lucky Seniors Centre is to follow at 3 p.m.
