Stanley Harold Hales was born at the Hales home in Quill Lake, Sask. and passed away at the Dryden District Regional Health Centre with members of his family at his side.
The Hales family moved to Moosejaw, SK in 1940. In 1950 eleven year old Stan and some of his family rode a train to Eagle River. He lived in Eagle River and attended the public school for just a few months and then moved to Minnitaki. Where he attended school walking 3 miles each way. After grade 8, Stan went on to Dryden High School.
A ride was arranged as there was no school bus service. If he missed his ride, he had to walk 20 miles to or from high school.
In high school Stan was on the Eagle‘s football team. By a fluke fumble, Stan was able to run in a touchdown for the team. (Article in Feb. 2025 Woodlands Report).
When Stan graduated grade 13 he went to teacher‘s college in North Bay. He decided it wasn’t for him so he hired on at Grove Side Dairy. He would pick up can milk from the area farmers and delivered bottle milk around Dryden. Stan later hired at Bell Canada on June 28th 1965 on line crew. Stan left Bell in June of 1973. He moved to B. C. Telephone, where he worked for one year and one day so as not pay back his signing bonus. The wages in B. C. didn’t cover his cost of living. On his return to Dryden he work for Don McArthur in the bush and hired on a job at Dryden Telephone. Later he returned to Bell Canada in 1978 as a cable repairman. Where he stayed until his retirement in 2000.

Stan owned an old second hand 1945 Harley Davidson and later bought a Gold Wing motorcycle.
He built a mini bike track at his property charging people 25 cents for a ride. Later in life he joined a motorcycle club, travelling on organized rides raising money for charity. With his Gold Wing , he travelled through the United States and Canada.

Stans had a love for tractors mostly green and joined Patricia Region Antique Tractor Club. He soon started collecting full size tractors. He attended tractor shows at Austin Manitoba towing a tractor behind him mostly his OC-3 (not green). Stan maintained his own tractors, rebuilding and painting.

Stan was also a member of the OPP Community Policing Committee-Machin, Co-chair for the CEP on Bell’s Health and Safety committee and the Dryden Historical Society member.

Stan is predeceased by his father and mother Alvery and Edna Hales, his brothers Richard, Donald, and George sister Dorothy Booth and nephew Richard Hales jr.
He is survived by one sister Grace Weberg, 3 nephews Howard Hales, Darwin and James Weberg and 6 nieces Martha Link, Lois Finlayson, Elaine Hales, Wanda Weberg, Melanie Weberg, and Melody Hamilton. Plus 8 great nieces and nephews and 11 grand nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Dr. Moir and nursing staff at both the hospital and Princess Court for their loving and excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at the Dryden Food Bank at 62 Queen Street, Dryden, Ontario P8N 1A4.
