Jennifer McKibbon September 27, 1957 - July 19, 2024

Date of Funeral

July 31, 2024

Jennifer McKibbon (nee Fleguel) passed away suddenly on July 19, 2024 with the love of her life, Gary, by her side at the age of 66 years. Survived by her husband of forty five years, Gary McKibbon, she is lovingly remembered by her daughter Emily Todd (Graeme, Silas, Saige) and son Samuel McKibbon (Amy, Hadley), sisters Nancy Wehlau (Bruce), Rosemary Fleguel, brothers Tim Fleguel and David Fleguel, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Jennifer was predeceased by her parents and brothers Bob and Jack Fleguel.

Born to Lloyd and Marguerite Fleguel (nee Maxwell) on September 27, 1957, in Bancroft Ontario, Jennifer lived in many areas of Ontario in her childhood and youth, finally making Northwestern Ontario her forever home in 1978 with her husband Gary. As a stay-at-home mother for her children’s early years, she gave herself wholeheartedly to her community through various volunteer and committee roles as well as acting as a Red Lake town councillor for twelve years. When Jennifer re-entered the workforce, she found an interest in public health and dedicated her time and intellect towards proactive and preventative health initiatives including smoking cessation and legislation. After briefly retiring, Jennifer felt called to return to the workforce to assist the initiative of Grand Council Treaty 3 in connecting surrounding First Nations communities to high-speed internet.

Jennifer was a woman of great faith. She had a heart for the marginalized, vulnerable, and hurting and always went out of her way to show God’s love to those who needed it. She had an adventurous spirit, traveled widely with her family, and made many memories on the motorcycle with Gary and on the water with her family. She loved gardening, loved to host and entertain, and delighted in cooking and caring for others. One of her biggest sources of pride were her children and grandchildren, and the unconditional love she shared with them will live on as her greatest legacy.

I never met Jennifer in person. I had the privilege of encountering her briefly in 2023 when she was working on the GCT #3 broadband project. Her dedication to the project and the Anishinaabe Nation of Treaty #3 was very pronounced and was very strong. She was kind, dedicated, and patient. My condolences to her family and friends.

It’s painful to know that a half-sister I knew so briefly could be gone already. Sadly, getting to know Jen through text messages and a couple of face-to-face meetings is not enough. But we did share many loves and hobbies, such as family, gardening, cooking, and travel. It fascinates me that we share so many commonalities. Both our husbands are hardcore motorcycle enthusiasts, and we envisioned planning a trip together – it just never happened. As much as I feel cheated not having more time with her, my heart breaks for her husband and family members who have had years to enjoy her. I am thinking of all of you as you celebrate the life of Jennifer. My sincerest condolences. ~ Penny 🕊️

Dear Gary and Mckibbon and Todd families,

Words fail at a time like this. I am so very sorry for your loss and am praying for you all as you go through the grief process.
Jennifer (I still think of her as “Mrs. Mckibbon” because that’s what I called her throughout my childhood in Red Lake) was an amazing person. Many people have already mentioned her qualities of determination, compassion, leadership, hospitality…all things I also admired about her. She touched so many people’s lives and made such a positive impact, that her legacy will live on for many, many years in her children, grandchildren, and others who had the privilege of knowing her.
