Ernest Schlecht
November 23, 1921 – May 19, 2018
With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on May 19, 2018. Ernest Schlecht passed away peacefully at home in Princess Court, Dryden Ontario, with family by his side. Ernie was reunited with his loving wife of 66 years, Elsie, who predeceased him in 2010.
Ernie is survived by his children; Bernice (Mac) MacLellan, Howard Schlecht, and Shirley (Andy) Fecho; grandchildren Shane MacLellan, Troy MacLellan, Amber Fecho and Nathan Fecho.
Ernie was born in Brokenhead Municipality, Manitoba on November 23, 1921 to Daniel and Louise Schlecht. Ernie was predeceased by both his parents, brothers August Schlecht, Ewald Schultz, Henry Schlecht, sisters Martha Lange, Alma Fuerst, Zelma Hunt, Elsie Schlecht, and Freda McKinney. Ernie will be lovingly missed by both family and friends.
Growing up to farm life in Manitoba, Ernie was a strong, hardworking man; self-taught to fix anything with his mechanical mind. Ernie ran a successful masonry business, constructing many businesses and homes in the Dryden area. For many years, Ernie and Elsie maintained their households in Dryden, as well as Beausejour, Manitoba, boasting lavish gardens at both locations and enjoying collecting items at yard sales and other unique finds.
Ernie would likely tell you his happiest moments were spent around a table filled with delicious food; enjoying the meal, lively discussions and company. Second to food, Ernie loved the outdoors spending hundreds of hours 4-Wheeling Northwestern Ontario.
Ernie’s talents also extended into music where he could play harmonica and guitar simultaneously. Ernie also was a tractor enthusiast, even locating and reclaiming his childhood family tractor.
There will forever remain a void in the family in Ernie’s absence, but there is peace in knowing Ernie and Elsie are together again, perfect and whole, and both eternally remain in our hearts and memories.
