GREGORY JOSEPH HAROLD PLITNIKAS
2003-2025
Peacefully on Saturday February 22, 2025, at the age of 21 years old, at St Amant, Gregory left us and went to Heaven.
Gregory leaves to cherish his memory his Mom and Dad Shelley Doudiet and Jerry Plitnikas, his grandma’s Gladys Doudiet and Yolanda Plitnikas, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He was very blessed to have friends who became a part of our family, Verna and Julie, Becky, Harland, Kass, Liam and Sylas, Judy and Charis. Gregory was predeceased by his grandpa’s Donald Doudiet and Peter Plitnikas.
Gregory was born in Dryden, Ontario on March 8, 2003 and because of the severity of his brain injury he was left with a severe intellectual disability. Gregory spent time in the NICU at St Joseph’s Hospital in London Ontario and on April 25, 2003 he finally came home. The next 4 1/2 years were spent in Dryden until the resources that he needed could not be met. In 2007 we moved to Winnipeg and Gregory became a part of the St Amant Community at 440 River Road. Gregory took part in many activities and events including school which was the highlight of his life. He loved his daily bike rides with his friends and staff, and he would let you know how disappointed he was when he couldn’t go. You could always hear his laughter and giggles and see his beautiful smile daily when passing by him riding around his home.
Gregory loved music and one of his favourite songs was Puff The Magic Dragon especially when his dad sang it. He would dance and laugh in his wheelchair and show us how excited he was.
Gregory and staff from the school made a TV Commercial with Global TV to raise funds for the sensory equipment for the indoor pool.
Gregory went back home to Dryden for summer vacations and Christmas breaks until it became too hard to manage his care without his support systems.
We would like to thank the Doctors, Surgeons and Nurses at the Grace Hospital for their excellent care during Gregory’s short stay, to the St Amant Nurses, PSW’s school staff, past and current staff who worked with him, who made his last days comfortable by coming to visit, sing songs, read stories, reminisce about their experiences with Gregory or just to sit and hold his hands. Your presence and your love made him feel special in those moments. To Becky, who stayed with Gregory a few nights so we could go home and get some sleep, for the home cooked meals you made for us, for always being there for us to lean on we can never thank you enough. To Verna for being with us throughout this difficult time, you spent time with Gregory so we could go home for a shower and a meal, you came up multiple times during your workday to check in, countless times you filled up the basket with chocolate and being there to talk to, we cannot thank you enough.
Words cannot express our love and gratitude that we have for his St Amant family. There are so many wonderful people who touch his life with such care, compassion, kindness, and love and you found it in your hearts to be his friend and not just his support staff. The work that you do here at 440 River Road will never go unnoticed, please keep advocating for the special people that you support.
An expression of sympathy can be made to The Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba, 903-213 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 1N3 204-982-4842.
