Jon was born on the family farm in the Municipality of Shell River (Zelena, Manitoba) to Dmytro and Sophie Filewich. He was one of fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. He left the farm to attend George Brown College in Toronto, Ontario to become a Barber. John worked as a Barber in Toronto with his brother Peter, and then in Red Rock, Ontario with his friend Nick Zibresky (The Fiddling Barber). John moved to Dryden to be closer to his brother Metro and his family. He opened his own barber shop and continued to operate it until his retirement. He had been in the profession for over 60 years.
John had a passion for conversation and jokes and kept his clients in Dryden and surrounding area thoroughly entertained. John was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching his favourite baseball team the Toronto Blue Jays play ball.

December 25, 2023 at 8:54 pmMy condolences on John’s passing. I knew John from him being in business with my dad Nick Zibresky in Red Rock, ON. He started me in golfing at The North Shore GC in 1971. His love for sports encouraged me to love sports too. Hope to see you in Heaven again.
