Bessie Simard

January 22, 1946 – January 17th, 2018.

Bessie Simard was born January 22, 1946 at Swain Post, Ontario. She lived a traditional lifestyle; spending her youth on the trap line in the Confederation/Women Lake area. In her adult years she lived the majority of her life in Balmertown, Ontario and then retired in Dryden, Ontario.

As a young woman Bessie worked at various Tourist Camps, specifically Canada North Lodge as a housekeeper, growing up I remember her getting jobs cleaning homes in Balmertown and at the Balmer cleaning rooms. Eventually she landed herself a job in the laundry department at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital.

Bessie found her true love, Louis on August 25, 1970 and they married on October 9, 1982. They had 3 beloved children; Bessie, Christine and Louis Jr., 8 grandchildren; Aaron, Lakotah, Shayla, Joshua, Tyler, Nevada, Jackson and Joseph. She is predeceased by her husband Louis, daughter lil Bessie and grandson Jackson.

Bessie was a dedicated woman who supported Louis and her children. She loved the traditional life, including hunting, fishing, camping and preparing wild food. Bessie was always willing to help others when asked and loved participating in events at the Dryden Native Friendship Centre.
